La Batalla de Puebla May 5, 1862
150 years ago today, Mexico defeated France in La Batalla de Puebla. A victory for freedom and democracy!
Led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, the Mexican army and volunteers faced the force and might of the French Empire and won.
France would go to occupy Mexico City, placing Maximilian I as the Emperor of Mexico soon after.

However in May 15, 1867, Maximilian I was captured by republican forces led by Benito Juárez. He was executed June 19, 1867.
In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is primarily celebrated in Puebla. Such a triumph over imperialism deserves much more recognition.
¡Viva Zaragoza! ¡Viva Juárez! ¡Viva Mexico!
